I’m excited to be publishing this because it gives anybody that wants to become great at high jump the opportunity to setup their own training academy.

Whether this is a setup at to do high jump training at home, at school, or in the local community, you will be able to excel as a high jumper if you have access to and train with the following high jump equipment.

To excel in the high jump, you need to do the following.

  1. Condition your body to maximise your vertical jumping height.
  2. Train technically so you can perfect your clearance attempts and consistency over the bar.

The equipment that I’m going to suggest isn’t cheap. However, it is affordable.

Even if you don’t get everything, you can get something to help you progress your high jumping ability.

This will be great for schools, local sports teachers and coaches, and even parent coaches.

High Jump Conditioning Equipment

Measuring equipment

Scales

Use this to track the athlete’s weight and to make sure that they hit the right weight in time for their competition.

You can opt for bathroom scales, which are inexpensive.

Click here to browse the range of weighing scales on Amazon.

Skinfold Calipers

Use skinfold calipers to track the body fat percentage on the athlete.

You want the athlete to be in a lean condition. Ideally under 12% body fat.

Use the skinfold calipers to track the athlete’s conditioning.

Accu-Measure Fitness 3000 Body Fat Caliper

Prices start from $14.99

You can click here to buy it on Amazon.

If you have the budget, get an electric timer, which can give you more accurate times and it will allow you to print times if you need to track the performance of multiple athletes.

Prices start from $265

Click here to buy an electric stopwatch on Amazon.

Conditioning equipment – Weights

Power rack

If the athlete will be training alone, it is ideal for them to have a power rack which will allow them to maximise their reps until failure, but will have the safety setup so that they can drop the weight if necessary.

Since the athlete will be working to maximum intensity, they will often go until failure (or their max reps for that particular weight).

This will minimise the risk of injury for the athlete that is doing the training.

You can opt for a relatively inexpensive option for around the $400 price mark.

Click here to see the weight cage/power rack on Amazon.

You can also opt for a complete gym setup if you want to incorporate other exercises into the athlete’s training.

This set starts from $900

Click here to see a set on Amazon.

Olympic barbell

The Olympic barbell will be used for several power movements including deadlifts, power cleans, snatch, and squats.

The plates for the barbell will provide the athlete with enough leeway to power from the ground.

Prices start from $140

Click here to buy it on Amazon

Olympic barbell plates

You want to get some plates that won’t get damaged when you drop them. Olympic barbell plates are perfect for this. You will want to invest in 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg sets.

Prices start from $75.

Click here to see available sets on Amazon.

Barbell protector

You will need this to help protect your neck when doing squats and also to provide some cushioning when you are doing horizontal bridges.

Prices start from $9.99

Click here to buy it on Amazon.

Dumbbells

These will be incorporated into several athletic development movements for the high jump. Whether you are training for strength, balance, or power, you will need dumbbells for your training.

You have the option of purchasing a set of dumbbells. However, it will require you to have additional space.

Prices for a complete set can start from $350.

Click here to buy the complete set on Amazon.

The other option is to get a dumbbell set with adjustable weight. Although more expensive, it is a great option if you are limited on space.

The Powerblock Elite Dumbbells are a great option. However, prices start from $404

Click here to buy them on Amazon.

Kettle Bells

Kettle Bells will be used mainly to train your hip explosiveness. You will need to invest in a few sets of varying weights for different explosive exercises that you will do.

If you are limited for space, you can opt for Kettle Bells from Power Blocks.

Pricing starts from $155.

Click here to buy a set on Amazon.

Bench

You will need a bench to do exercises such as a single leg squat or single leg dumbbell press.

You want to invest in one that is sturdy and that won’t wobble.

Click here to buy a quality bench on Amazon.

Chin-up bar

You need this mainly for your hanging abdominal work. You can invest in one that can hang on a door frame.

Click here to see a range of chin-up bars on Amazon.

Conditioning equipment – Explosiveness

Plyometric box

Invest in a soft plyometric box, as it will eliminate the fear of injury with the athletes.

Click here to buy the plyometric box on Amazon.

Hurdles

Invest in soft adjustable hurdles that will challenge the athlete to reach their maximum explosiveness.

These types of adjustable training hurdles are ideal as they minimise the risk of injury.

Prices start from $33.

Click here to buy them on VS Athletics.

Push sled

This will help build the driving power in your legs.

Prices start from $199.

Click here to buy it on Amazon.

Pull sled

This is to help build explosiveness in the pulling power of your legs.

Click here to buy it on VS Athletics.

High jump technical training equipment.

Soft high jump bar

You will need to get the athlete to practice mainly with the soft high jump bar until they gain the confidence to clear the hard bar successfully. It will also help to minimise the risk of injury.

Prices start from $23.

Click here to buy it on Amazon

High jump, mats, uprights and crossbar

This is essential, but will be the most significant investment. The athlete needs a mat to land on in order to practice the technical aspects of the high jump safely.

The cheapest options start from $7500.

You will also need uprights and crossbar to complete the full technical run and jump for the high jump. You will need to train to correct your approach and your position at the high jump bar.

You can invest in affordable options if you have access to a high jump mat.

You can also invest in the complete setup with a high jump mat. However, you will need to have dedicated space to store the high jump equipment.

Click here to see the buy the complete set on VS Athletics.

Cones

You will need cones to serve as markers for the run-up, stride pattern, and curve pattern for the athlete.

Click here to buy the cones on Amazon.

Apparrel

Plyometric shoes

These shoes can help to extend the ankle flexion for the athlete. Wearing these all of the time when walking and even running will improve the range of motion in the muscle, as well as the explosive potential of the muscle.

Although they may not be as trendy, if you want to develop the elasticity and explosiveness of your calf muscles, these will help.

Click here to buy the plyometric shoes on Amazon.

Weightlifting shoes

You should only invest in these if you find that you are having difficulty with your ankle flexion. It would be ideal to conduct some of the leg exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and power cleans barefoot so that you can train the finer muscles to be active when executing power movements.

If your range of motion is limited, the weightlifting shoes will adjust your body’s movement mechanics and it will allow you to control more weight.

This is a good benefit, as long as you are progressively building more power through your hip flexors and your leg muscles. However, there will be a little bit lost in the ankle flexion.

Prices for weightlifting shoes start from $60.

You can click here to buy weightlifting shoes on Amazon.

High jumpers that have access to this equipment can train in an environment that will allow them to excel.
