When I was doing high jump, I used to think that this was the case. So I purchased some ankle weights and tried to train myself to improve the power in my knee drive so I could jump higher.
Ankle weights do provide some resistance. But it doesn’t really target the right muscle.
Instead, you’ll be better investing in resistance bands that can help you provide the necessary resistance for certain muscle groups.
You will also need to do weight exercises at the gym to help your strength, so you can develop more power.
What’s the thought process behind using ankle weights for training?
This is to help with the knee drive.
You would be better suited to putting a resistance band on your ankle and a pole. And then practicing the knee drive explosiveness with just enough resistance for you to focus on your power.
Additionally, you can practice holding your knee drive by holding your knee drive in a static position with the resistance band under tension. Hold this for as long as you can. When you are doing the high jump, it’s likely that you will hold the position for 2-3 seconds. You want to hold it long enough for you to not drop your knee, and maximise the vertical lift in your high jump.
It is to help with your strength endurance during the knee drive.
Ankle weights could be used as a part of the leg extension movement. However, it would be better suited to use the leg extension machine in the gym, since it will significantly increase your strength and power.
Can ankle weights be used for certain ab exercises?
Yes they can. However, they should be used for leg extensions and knee raises with a focus on power and explosiveness, and also to help with resistance training against gravity.
If you would like to purchase some ankle weights, you can buy them on Amazon.
However, a leg extension machine will provide superior results once you are able to extend beyond 50kgs. You can click here to buy one on Amazon.
