Having good high jump form will help you get the extra edge in the high jump event. However, the main focus for a high jumper is to improve their conditioning so that their body has the ability to get the vertical height to clear the jump.
Good high jump form will allow the athlete to be more consistent with clearing heights and avoid hitting the bar.
In some cases, they won’t need as much height because they will be able to maneuver their body over the bar successfully.
Good high jump form becomes more important once you start jumping over 2.10m for men and 1.80m for women.
It is absolutely critical for 2.30+m male high jumpers and 1.90+m female jumpers.
What are some of the high jump form factors that the athlete should keep in mind?
- The runup needs to be perfect
- The athlete needs to run a good curve
- The athlete needs to hold a good knee drive.
- The athlete needs a good arch and timing over the bar.
